Attendance
Report an Absence or Tardy
- (505) 268-4356 ext. 2
If your child is going to be absent or tardy, please call the school the day of the absence so we can note it and mark it excused. Please include your student's name, their teacher/grade level, and the reason for their absence.
Absences
APS students are allowed no more than five unexcused absences per semester and no more than ten per school year. According to the APS Attendance Policy, absences may be excused for the following reasons with appropriate documentation: doctor’s appointment, death in the family, religious commitment, illness, family emergency, diagnostic testing, and school/college visit.
An unexcused absence is any absence that does not fit into the prescribed guidelines. If the child is absent and no communication has been received from home, the absence will be recorded as unexcused.
Tardies
If your child is tardy (arriving to class after the 7:33 bell rings), you MUST bring him/her to the Main Office to sign in and get a tardy slip. Students with consistent unexcused tardies may lose recess.
An unexcused tardy is any consistent behavior that causes a student to be late (i.e., not getting up on time, missing the bus, etc.). Please be aware that in addition to absences, excessive tardiness may be referred for further action.
Breakfast and Lunch Program
Sandia Base participates in the APS good nutrition program which includes a reduction in sugar, salt, and increased use of natural foods. Cafeteria lunches may be purchased from the cafeteria manager from 8:30 AM until 9:00 AM. Please call (505) 268-9964 to speak with the Cafeteria Manager.
Parents may come and eat lunch with their children. Please remember to drop by the Main Office to sign in and pick up your visitor’s badge.
Breakfast and lunch are provided for Sandia Base students who wish to purchase these meals. Extra cartons of milk cost $ .40 each day. Adult lunches may also be purchased for $3.10 per meal. Parents who may need financial assistance with meal payments for their child must complete an eligibility form (available from the cafeteria manager) to establish eligibility for free or reduced-cost meals. Reduced cost is $ .40 for lunch. It takes a few days to determine eligibility, so please plan for your child’s meals until the program is established for your student.
We encourage every family to complete the free or reduced lunch form to determine eligibility. Federal funding for our school will depend in part on whether all families apply for this important program.
No student at Sandia Base will be allowed to go without lunch. When a child charges a meal, parents will receive notification of charge amount and date. Notification will be sent again after the third charge. After the third charge, the student will receive a cheese sandwich and milk only.
Please call the Cafeteria Manager if you need any more information: (505) 268-9964
Cell phones
Students may not use cell phones at school. Students will be permitted to use the telephone in the Main Office in cases of emergency.
If your child has a cell phone and brings it school, it is to remain OFF and in their backpack at school. If a child is found with a cell phone during the school day, it will be confiscated and given to the Principal. The child may pick up the cell phone after school. If this occurs a second time, a parent/guardian will need to have a conference with the Principal before the cell phone will be returned. We cannot be responsible for any cell phones that are lost or stolen.
Dress code
Students at SBES should dress in a manner that reflects standards of personal conduct to promote a positive, safe, and healthy atmosphere within the school. Students and their families may determine personal appearance and dress except where their dress or personal appearance presents a health/safety hazard or disruption/distractions in the educational process.
The following dress code will be enforced at SBES:
- Shoes or durable footwear must be worn on campus at all times. Shoes with wheels in the soles are prohibited.
- We strongly recommend that students wear durable tennis shoes (especially on the days they have PE).
- “Flip-flop”/thong sandals can be dangerous.
- Hats, headgear (including jacket hoods), and sunglasses may not be worn inside the school building.
- Students may not wear extended (hanging) belts, bandanas, or wallet chains.
- No skin may show between the bottom of a shirt or blouse and the top of pants or skirts.
- Tank tops may be worn in warm weather. Tank top straps must be the width of three fingers or more.
- Spaghetti straps and/or strapless tops are not allowed.

- Clothing with inappropriate language, pictures, and/or excessive tears may not be worn.

Students who wear inappropriate clothing to school will be sent to the Main Office, who will call parents for a change of clothes. If we are unable to get in touch with a parent, the child will be sent to the Health Office to change into something we have at school.

A written parent request must address areas of perceived giftedness and why there is a need for services outside of the general education classroom. These referrals will be submitted to City Center during the student’s grade level window only.
- The SAT meeting participants need to seriously consider all information when it is a parent-initiated referral. For parent initiated referrals, a discussion of why the student should be screened if he/she does not meet the initial criteria should be documented. (i.e. what does the parent see the child needs that is not being provided in the regular education
- The 60-day evaluation timeline does not apply to gifted referrals.
- Previously screened students must meet the referral criteria and will be eligible to be screened again in 1 ½ to 2 years. (i.e. there will be a grade skip).
